Lamkin of Northumberland County, Virginia, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and Columbia County, Georgia

Jeremiah Lamkin was born 9 Aug 1743, St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia, and died 23 Jul 1804 in Columbia County, Georgia. His son, Jeremiah Lamkin was the father of the Columbia County, Georgia family. The Lamkins had substantial holdings in North Carolina and several of Jeremiah's sons amassed large land holdings in Georgia, James, particularly. The Lamkins removed to the Great Kiokee Creek on the Savannah River about 1800. One of Jeremiah's daughters, Elizabeth, was married to William Chandler Norment and that family also came to Columbia County where Norment died in 1805 and afterwards Elizabeth removed to Wilkinson County, Mississippi with her brother, Samuel Lamkin, who was moving westward at the time in search of new lands. The Lamkins were adventurers. They owned extensive lands in North Carolina, then moved down to Georgia where planter James Lamkin owned thousands of acres. Other members of the family did not fair so well, as Samuel Lamkin went to Mississippi.
